Immunizations
Which immunizations are required to travel to Guatemala? Well, review the CDC’s website for travel to Central America, and talk to your doctor. Start soon, some immunizations require a series of shots or doses to be effective.

Hello,
I have found the following two sites helpful and fairly specific:
http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/mamerica_carib/guatemala.html
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel/central_america/guatemala.shtml
My recommendations would be to receive Hepatitis A and Typhoid.
Hepatitis A (HAVRIX) requires one shot for protections and then a booster in 6 months for long term immunity.
The typhoid vaccine (VIVOTIF) is oral.
I don’t really think Hepatits B is necessary unless you plan on receiving blood transfusions/injections (I know you can’t predict that kind of thing) or getting married down there. Hepatitis B is not transmitted by food/water (that is how Hepatis A and typhoid are transmitted). It is only transmitted by blood or intimate contact.
You should be up to date on your tetanus shot. If you haven’t had one within ten years, I would recommend specifically asking for Tdap (Adacel) as it provides protection against Pertussis as well. (I had my Adacel this morning.) Pertussis is a growing problem in the US.
There is no need for malaria prophylaxis as we will be in the highlands.
